Shipping from Bermuda to the U.S.? Here’s What You Need to Know

To make shipping faster and hassle-free, any item with a dutiable value—including gifts—must now have duties prepaid before your parcel leaves Bermuda. This ensures smooth customs clearance and avoids delays.

✅Good news: Some items are exempt

Not every shipment requires prepaid duties. The following categories remain exempt and can be shipped as usual:

  • Exempt documents: Letters, philatelic collectible postage stamps, and postal cards.
  • Bona fide gifts: Qualify when they meet all of the following conditions:
    • Duty-free limit: Gifts valued at USD 100 or less per recipient, per day are generally exempt from duties and taxes.
    • Customs declaration: The package must be clearly marked as “Unsolicited Gift” on the customs form.
    • Detailed description: Include the names of all recipients (if a consolidated package) and a clear description of each item with its value (e.g., “one belt, $20”).
    • Important Note:
      • Items acquired by the shipper through purchase, barter, or similar transactions may not qualify as gifts.
      • Shipments sent by businesses also do not qualify as bona fide gifts.

❌ Prohibited or Restricted Items

The following items cannot be shipped under the gift exemption and may require duties or be disallowed:

  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Certain restricted food items (such as meat products)

Tip for shippers: If your gift exceeds the USD 100 threshold or includes restricted items, duties must be prepaid through the mobile app before shipping.

Here’s what you’ll find On This Page

What Is A Declaration ID?

A Declaration ID is a 13-character code that proves you’ve completed your customs declaration and paid the required duties.

Why a Declaration ID is required:

  • U.S. regulations require all parcels entering the country by mail to have duties prepaid.
  • Bermuda Post cannot generate a shipping label for U.S. parcels without a Declaration ID.
  • The Declaration ID tells Bermuda Post your shipment is prepaid through Zonos, who invoices you and pays duties to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Without a Declaration ID, we cannot create a Bermuda Post shipping label for U.S. shipments.

How to Pay Duties with the Mobile App

Shipping to the U.S. is now simpler and faster with our duty prepayment process. The Mobile App uses built-in AI to make declarations quick and accurate.

Once you complete payment in the app, you’ll receive a Declaration ID. Bring this ID to our General Post Office (GPO) in Hamilton when you’re ready to ship your parcel. This ensures your package clears U.S. customs without delays.
